One of the most notable things about South Dakota is that its landscapes are both incredibly diverse and beautiful. You’ll see everything from rolling prairies to glittering lakes to snow covered mountaintops. The Western region of South Dakota (the Black Hills, Badlands, and Lakes Region) showcases pine covered peaks, majestic granite spires, and unique rock outcropping. The Black Hills (which translates to ‘Paha Sapa’ – a name given to the area by the Native Americans) are full of scenery and have a rich history.
South Dakota is also home to one of the most famous monuments in the country and all over the world – Mount Rushmore. This monument depicts the likeness of four of the most important former presidents of the United States – George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. These presidents’ portraits are carved into the granite walls of the Black Hills and have stood there for about 90 years.
While being one of the least populated states in the country, South Dakota is still home to a bevy of famous and notable people from the past and present. Just a short list of these well-known South Dakotans includes Sitting Bull, Wild Bill Hickock, George McGovern, and Tom Brokaw. Not a bad list for a state that’s 46th in the country in terms of population!
